Dimensions of variation in Old English modals

Concentrating on Old English homilies, the paper takes a look at the morphosyntactic and semantic building g blocks available in the early modals. It addresses variation pertaining to categorial status, modal base, and modal force. Additionally, actuality entailments are discussed in a brief comparison with German. Structurally, the Old English modals are suggested to reside at the height of an aspectual head.
