The syntactization of discourse

On the basis of data mainly drawn from Romanian and West Flemish this paper proposes a syntactic analysis of a set of verb based discourse markers that appear on the edge of the utterance. It is argued that the distribution and morphology of these particles provide evidence for an analysis in terms of a layered structure encoding the speech event. The paper adopts the cartographic model.
